From the very beginning, it was the vision of the Hospice founders to build a centre that would provide a permanent home for the organization's Community Program and enable it to offer 24-hour Residential Care in a homelike setting. That goal was achieved with the opening of The Dorothy Ley Hospice Centre in February 2009.
Since opening our doors, the Hospice has more than quadrupled the number of people it serves in the community -- increasing from 590 to more than 3,000 people. Demand for our services is expected to continue to grow as a result of our aging population and with Etobicoke having one of the highest seniors populations in Toronto.
While there are several other palliative care centre in Toronto, many of them are targeted to serving specific illnesses. The Dorothy Ley Hospice is the only hospice in Toronto and Mississauga offering both Community and Residential programs to people living with any life-limiting illness and loss.
Thanks to the generosity of the community, most of the Centre's costs were raised through a two phased capital campaign - Within Our Reach and Building on Success. To address the shortfall, the Hospice took out a $2 million loan, of which we still owe $1.6 million.
All funds donated to the Capital Campaign are now used to cover new capital requirements and paying down the loan. Your gift to the capital campaign is helping support a lasting legacy that will serve this community for generations to come.
