Wendy Julia Hiscox Volunteer Training Program

All direct care support volunteers participate in a 30-hour training program. Training is offered three times a year and volunteers receive a certificate upon completion. The training provides:

  • a better understanding of death, dying, grief and loss issues
  • the hospice philosophy
  • an understanding of medical management for caring for a terminally ill patient
  • the psychological and social issues families deal with in the care of their dying loved one

Volunteers who do not work directly with palliative individuals will be asked to participate in a general orientation training program.

In addition to this formal training, volunteers are able to participate in a variety of educational and support programs offered by the Hospice.  These include Nurturing Mondays and our Lunch and Learn educational seminars.
